Despite being digitally remastered there is poor contrast and a lack of sharpness in the picture together with variable sound quality, all reflected in the budget price of this multi-region DVD. Breen has a sunny juvenile charm and although he sings like a soubrette, both films are quite enjoyable if one does not expect too much.

In keeping with the most popular format of 1930s musicals, Bobby Breen stars as a precocious singing orphan in both of these films, adopted by a San Francisco fisherman in Fisherman’s Wharf (72 min.) and as a late plantation owner’s son in pre-Civil War Louisiana in Way Down South (61 min.). The latter film is notable for its unpretentious and enlightened views on the master-slave relationships in the 19th-century deep south, most strikingly because the film was made decades before the rise of the civil rights victories of the ’60s.
