Master John Brookman Retail price 2/6. A: The Star of Bethlehem (wds F.E. Weatherly (1848-1929) - music Stephen Adams (pseud. of the baritone Michael Maybrick (1841[sic]-1913), 1887) (matrix 0B3586-2) B: Nearer, my God, to Thee (wds Sarah Fuller/Flower Adams (1805-48), publ. 1841 - music Lewis Carey (pseud. of Lucie or Lucy Johnstone, d. 1925), 1902) (0B3587-2) Both rec. 11 July 1934 (a few days before John's 16th birthday), Kingsway Hall, London, with Herbert Dawson, organ. This disc did not remain in the catalogues for long, being deleted in Oct. 1937. Now available on Amphion CDs "The Better Land" vols. 4 & 5 respectively, the second item apparently from a test pressing and not the published take. The HMV "B" series discography says recorded with the Westminster Central Hall Choir, but there is no choir evident on the CD issues.
The Gramophone (Dec. 1934, p. 268) has a short, unenthusiastic review by R.W. The Talking Machine and Wireless Trade News (London, Dec. 1934, p. 260) notes a "strikingly pure but rather reedy treble".
