The Australian Boys Choir    (est. 1939) Classical Choir of Boys
Print Friendly Page
The Australian Boys Choir Unique because of its wide-ranging repertoire and the rigour of its training program, the Australian Boys Choir is the principal performing group of the Melbourne-based Australian Boys Choral Institute, founded in 1939 to provide musical education to talented boys. Activities in the early days focused on careful training and extensive touring throughout Australia, but in recent years the Institute has diversified its activities with the formation of other performing groups and a touring program which now regularly takes the choir overseas.

The choir has contributed to the soundtracks of several movies - most notably in the Oscar-nominated musical score of Elizabeth, and the Australian box office hit The Dish.

Internationally, the achievements of our boys have been recognised - with invitations to represent Australia on the overseas stage - attending the great Jubilee Year celebrations in Rome in January 2000, and events leading up to the Nagano Winter Olympics in 1998. The choir has attended Americafest, an international singing festival for male choirs, on three occasions (in 1998, 2000 & 2002), and was one of Australia's representatives in the World Choral Symposium, held in Minneapolis, Minnesota in 2002.

The Institute's dedicated and highly qualified music staff are led by Artistic Director Noel Ancell, one of Australia's most experienced and highly respected choral musicians.
