The Abbey School Choir, Tewkesbury (est. 1973)

Classical Choir of Men and Boys

In 1973, Miles Amherst founded the Abbey School in order for Tewksbury Abbey to have a daily service sung by a choir of men and boys. Prior to this, the Abbey's choir sung weekend services.

The Abbey School Choir consisted of sixteen choristers between the ages of 8 and 13, and lay clerks. The Choir sang four services each week in Tewkesbury Abbey and undertook a number of external engagements from time to time. Diversity was at the heart of their work – recordings, concerts, broadcasts and international tours give breadth to their musical training.

The standard of chorister training enabled the vast majority of boys to win music scholarships and exhibitions to some of the leading senior independent schools in the country.

The Abbey School Closed on 15 July 2006 at which point the choir moved to Dean Close Preparatory School, Cheltenham and was renamed 'Tewkesbury Abbey Schola Cantorum'.

Now and again a choir director finds he has an exceptional voice at his disposal, and so it is here that we can feature the outstandingly colourful tone quality and musicianship of treble Andrew Swait, only ten years old as we record. His voice was the original inspiration for this disc. Solo arias are interspersed with full choir numbers, some featuring treble solos and duets. We are glad to couple works by Schubert and Rachmaninoff with our own English masters of church music, Sir Hubert Parry and John Rutter and to feature Morten Lauridsen’s setting of Ubi caritas, combining a lushness of texture with age-old plainsong.
