Poznański Chór Katedralny   [Poznan Cathedral Choir]    (est. 1881) Classical Choir of Men and Boys
Print Friendly Page
Poznański Chór Katedralny Polyphonic music has been performed in Poznań's Cathedral since the XV century, both by boys from its school and by its clergy. Polyphonic music truly blossomed, however, in the XVI century, with the establishment of the renowned Lubrański Academy. Following this tradition, in 1881 Fr. Józef Surzyński formed a boys' and men's choir in the Cathedral. The Poznań's Cathedral Choir's remarkable successes came after September 1, 1914, when Fr. Wacław Gieburowski began leading it. Since then the choir was called The Poznań Nightingales by French journalists. His choir became famous throughout Poland and achieved wide success abroad, as well. The outbreak of World War II interrupted the choir's activities, and Fr. Gieburowski died in exile in 1943. At the initiative of Fr. Zdzisław Bernat, in 1960 a mixed choir group was revived, which performed in the Cathedral for nine years. In 1963, a parallel boys' choir was established, marking a return to the Cathedral's former traditions.

The Poznań Cathedral Choir has traveled abroad on several tours, visiting Spain, England, Austria, France, Holland, Germany, Scotland, Switzerland, Italy. It has taken part in International Festivals of Boys' Choirs in Poznań, Częstochowa, Nantes, Amiens and Rome. In the 1990s, the choir also managed to record seven compact discs, and perform on television and radio several times.

In 2001 the Poznań Cathedral Choir was honored to be "The Historic Choir of the European Union" and achieved the charter of the "Union's Choir" by the "FECU" – Federation of European Choirs. Two additional recordings were made around this time: "Missa Dominicalis" (1883) by Dr Józef Surzyński in the Cathedral of Poznań and "The Symphony of the Gardens" (2002) by Zbigniew Lowzyl. In 2003, the choir was preparing to record two new CDs with Gregorian choral and Polish polyphonic music.
