Alois Mühlbacher    (b. 1995) Boy Soprano Soloist
Print Friendly Page
Alois Mühlbacher Alois has been with the St Florianer Sängerknaben since 2005. Apart from singing and touring with his choir he has had many solo appearances at different festivals such as the Wiener Festwochen or the Kinderklangwolke 2009 and in the Bernstein's Mass (Salzburg) and Chichester Psalms (Linz, Dresden) or Schubert's Mass in E-flat major.
Alois has appeared on stage as First Boy in Mozart's Magic Flute (Luxemburg, Wien, Salzburg, Aix en Provence), as Yniold in Tokyio, as Shepherd Boy and as Oberto with the Vienna State Opera, not to forget numerous leading roles with the St. Florian Boys' Choir's own productions (e.g. Pamina, Queen of the Night, Rosalinde).
He has developed a special interest in opera arias originally written for female sopranos. In recognition of his talent recordings for a solo CD album were made. The album "Unerhört" was released in 2010. Two further albums were recorded, one with duets and Lieder he recorded together with three other boys of his choir and one with works by Gustav Mahler and Richard Strauss.
His extraordinary singing technique still allows him to sing as a boy soprano despite his age. In 2012 he sang soprano soli as part of the "Fiori Musicali" concert series with Ars Antiqua Austria. In May 2012 he sang in the role of the shepherd boy in "Tosca" at the Concertgebouw Amsterdam.

Alois Mühlbacher - Johann Joseph Fux: Oratorium germanicum de Passione
Johann Joseph Fux: Oratorium germanicum de Passione (Pan Classics PC10284, CD) February 2013
Featuring Alois Mühlbacher   St. Florianer Sängerknaben
The Oratorium 'Germanicum de Passione', composed in 1731, is the only oratorio in the German language by the Viennese court composer Johann Joseph Fux. The work was long considered lost; aside from a handwritten textbook in Kremsmünster Abbey, no other sources appeared to have been preserved. In 2004, a score from Ottobeuren Abbey incorrectly attributed to Antonio Caldara could be identified as identical to the Fux oratorio believed to have been lost; this work has now been recorded for the first time by Gunar Letzbor, his Ensemble Ars Antiqua Austria and soloists of the St. Florian Boys' Choir.

The ancient myth of Andromeda and Perseus is interpreted by the librettist Heinrich Rademin as an allegory of the Passion of Christ: the daughter (Andromeda) must make atonement for the guilt of her mother (Cassiopeia); she is ultimately freed by Perseus and taken as his wife. In the Christian interpretation, this signifies the forgiveness of original sin through the death of Jesus Christ and his marriage with the human soul, to which the final chorus refers in all clarity. Fux’s oratorio, which can probably be regarded as one of the master's final compositions, is truly state of the art. This elaborate work offers convincing proof, once again, that its creator was probably one of the best contrapuntists of his time.

Alois Mühlbacher (Perseus), Simon Boden (Andromeda), Jakob Kritzinger (Cassiopeia), Matthias Helm (Furor) & Markus Miesenberger. St. Florian Boys' Choir & Ars Antiqua, Gunar Letzbor
