Sönke won 1st price in solo performance at "Jugend musiziert" in Hamburg in 2002 and in ensemble in the category of "Alte Musik" in Schleswig-Holstein in 2004, both times with commendation, thus, he took also part in the Bundeswettbewerb (national competition) of "Jugend musiziert" in 2002 and 2004.
In 2003 he performed the solo parts for boy soprano in Dietrich Lohff's "Requiem für einen polnischen Jungen" in St. Laurentii, in Itzehoe.
Besides music, Sönke has also shown talent in writing. Two of his short stories won prizes in local writing competitions.
He has continued his musical career as a singer after voice change. In 2007 he participated again in the Jugend musiziert competition in the country of Hamburg and won 2nd price in the category "Alte Musik" (cembalo and bass). Sönke Tams Freier is featured as bariton on a recent CD production with music of the early 17th century.
