Escolanía del Escorial En el año 1567, apenas 4 años después de comenzada la Construcción del Real Monasterio de San Lorenzo del Escorial, ya fundó e instituyó Felipe II un Colegio y Seminario en el Monasterio de Párraces (Segovia), mientras se concluían las obras del Escorial. Estos niños del seminario eran instruidos en gramática y latinidad así como en música (canto llano principalmente) y estaban encargados de cantar todos los días la Misa del Alba en la Basílica, así como la salve tras el rezo de vísperas de la comunidad de monjes del Monasterio. También tenían la obligación de ayudar como acólitos en las misas que se oficiaban en la Basílica.

En número de 40 los niños cantaban diariamente en grupos de 20, también en señaladas fiestas intervenían en los villancicos y danzas que tenían lugar: Navidad, San Lorenzo, San Jerónimo, Corpus… así como en los recibimientos a los Reyes y personalidades que acudían al Monasterio.

Esta labor e institución se mantuvo a través de los siglos hasta la desamortización de Mendizábal, momento en que la comunidad monacal hubo de abandonar el Monasterio y con ello cesó toda actividad. Posteriormente a este abandono se restituyó el seminario de la manó del capellán de la reina Isabel II: D. Antonio Mª Claret (posteriormente obispo y santo). Y dentro del seminario creó una serie de becas para niños que tuvieran cualidades para la música para mantener este grupo de cantores para el decoro litúrgico de la Basílica.

De nuevo esta institución refundada pasó por distintas vicisitudes que finalizaron con su desaparición y una nueva fundación, ya de mano de los religiosos Agustinos, en 1974 de la Escolanía tal y como se conoce hoy. Con unos estatutos modernos y una organización práctica pero con la misma finalidad de siempre: el embellecimiento de la liturgia escurialense.

In 1567, just four years after the construction of the Real Monasterio de San Lorenzo del Escorial had begun, Felipe II founded and instituted a School and Seminary in the Monastery of Párraces (Segovia), while the works of the Escorial were being finished. These children of the seminary were instructed in grammar and latin as well as in music (plain song mainly) and were charged to sing the Mass of the Dawn every day in the Basilica, as well as after the evening prayers of the community of monks of the monastery. Also they had the obligation to help as acolytes in the masses that were celebrated in the Basilica.

The 40 children sang daily in groups of 20, and also took part in the following celebrations with carols and dances: Christmas, San Lorenzo, San Jerónimo, Corpus... as well as in the presence of the Kings and personalities that went to the Monastery.

This work and institution remained through the centuries until the confiscation of Mendizábal, at which the monacal community had to leave the Monastery and with it all activity stopped. Following this abandonment the seminary was restituted of flowed it of the chaplain of queen Isabel II: D. Antonio Mª Claret (later bishop and saint). And within the seminary it created a series of scholarships for children who had musical abilities to maintain this group of singers to honor the liturgy of the Basilica.

Again this refounded institution went through different stages that ended with their disappearance and a new foundation, already in the hands of the Augustine monks, in 1974 of the Escolanía as it is known today. With modern statutes and a practical organization but with the same purpose of always: the embellecimiento of the escurialense liturgy.
