Josef got his start as a boy soprano, first distinguished himself on a 1955 recording of Weill and Brecht's "school opera" Der Jasager supervised by Otte Lenya. He developed into an outstanding tenor as he reached adulthood.

An opera in two acts, based on an ancient Japanese Noh Play, "Taniko", text by Bertolt Brecht. The opera was first performed at Berlin in 1930. Siegfried Kohler is conducting the Dusseldorf Children's Chorus and Chamber Orchestra. Josef is singing the principal role of "The Student", along with Lys Bert, "The Mother" and Willibald Vohla "The Teacher".
