Werner was soloist with the Wiener Sängerknaben in the mid-fifties. After his participation with the choir, he studied bassoon and enter in the Wien Symphonic Orchestra (1962-1966) then studied song again. In 1966 he started a new carreer and became one of the best mozartian tenor of his generation. He married the austrian soprano Helga Dernesch.
