Choir of Christ Church Cathedral, Oxford Classical Choir of Men and Boys
Print Friendly Page
Choir of Christ Church Cathedral, Oxford There has been a choir at Christ Church since 1526 when John Taverner became Organist and Master of the Choristers. The statutes of Cardinal Wolsey's magnificent college, which he called "Cardinal College", envisaged thirty singing priests and twenty clerks, in addition to sixteen choristers. Before the College could be completed Wolsey fell from favour and died in 1530. Henry VIII's new foundation uniting the See of Oxford with the College, was now called Christ Church, and became the Cathedral Church of the diocese.

The present choir consists of sixteen boy choristers and twelve men, of whom six are professional Lay Clerks, whilst the remainder are undergraduates (Academical Clerks) at Christ Church, reading for degrees in a wide variety of subjects. Under its present director Stephen Darlington, the choir has maintained a position as one of the top Cathedral choirs in the country achieving particular recognition for music of the 16th and 20th centuries.

Choir of Christ Church Cathedral, Oxford - Choirs of Angels: Music from the Eton Choirbook, Vol. 2
Choirs of Angels: Music from the Eton Choirbook, Vol. 2 (Avie AV2184, CD) March 2013
Featuring Choir of Christ Church Cathedral, Oxford
The Choir of Christ Church Cathedral, Oxford, under the direction of Stephen Darlington, gives glorious renderings of rich 15th-century English sacred music from the Eton Choirbook, by Browne, Cornysh, Davy, Lambe and Wylkynson.

Following a critically acclaimed recording of music from the Eton Choirbook, More Divine Than Human (AV2167), The Choir of Christ Church Cathedral, Oxford returns with a second volume from the vast collection of 15th-century English sacred music, Choirs of Angels. The works range from John Browne's richly scored eight-part O Maria salvatoris mater, the first piece in the Eton Choirbook, to William Cornysh's exquisite miniature Ave Maria mater Dei, the choirbook's shortest work. The compositional range in the Eton Choirbook demands extraordinary virtuosity from its performers, and Stephen Darlington and his choir of men and boys do this glorious music tremendous justice.

Choir of Christ Church Cathedral, Oxford - Wellesz: Choral Music

Choir of Christ Church Cathedral, Oxford - Winter Lullabies
Winter Lullabies (The Gift of Music CDG1155, CD) November 2008
Featuring Choir of Christ Church Cathedral, Oxford   Joe Armon-Jones   Gregory Bannan
A major new commission from the pen of composer and TV star Howard Goodall, framed by famous, gentle, approachable music for winter and Christmas, sung by the heavenly boys' voices of Christ Church cathedral choir. Winter Lullabies, for solo harp and boys' voices, comprises six loosely-interwoven movements, and despite Thomas Campion's jovial toast to the delights of winter with which it begins, the texts mainly centre on the hardship and the challenges of winter, particularly for mothers and their infants. The core of the work is a specially-written text in English and Gaelic, Crossing the border, by Irish poet Theo Dorgan. Whilst the central theme of the cycle associates secular issues of homelessness, displacement and flight with the Christian nativity story, there is also a general celebration of motherhood and the different moods that might be embraced by a lullaby. With this in mind, the composer has even revisited Josef Mohr's familiar text Stille Nacht, attaching to it a more dance-like musical texture than the well-worn Franz Gruber original. Two anonymous lullabies, one joyful the other sorrowful, from very different continents and centuries, are juxtaposed in the second half of the cycle, and the whole piece concludes with Lullaby of Winter, to Goodall's own text, knitting together lyrical and musical ideas from the previous songs. Winter Lullabies was commissioned by Christ Church Cathedral Choir, receives its world premiere with Catrin Finch on this CD, and it was conceived with the richly robust, rhythmically energetic voices of Stephen Darlington's boy choristers very much in mind.

Choir of Christ Church Cathedral, Oxford - Taverner: Missa Gloria Tibi Trinitas
Taverner: Missa Gloria Tibi Trinitas (Avie  AV2123, CD) May 2007
Featuring Choir of Christ Church Cathedral, Oxford   Gregory Bannan
John Taverner, the most outstanding English composer of his time, was appointed Informator Choristarum of Cardinal College, Oxford in 1526, with the charge of establishing the foremost choral institution in the land. He succeeded magnificently and the tradition continues to this day at what is now known as Christ Church, Oxford, with acclaimed director Stephen Darlington, renowned for his strength in 16th century choral music, at the helm. Darlington and his forces – 16 boys and 12 men, unchanged since the 1520s – pay homage to their predecessor with a programme of his liturgical music written at Oxford. While there, Taverner had to write music to be performed virtually round the clock and he rose to the challenge using great imagination. He wrote innumerable memorable melodies, with an unprecedented emotional range and a sophisticated sense of drama. His music was astonishingly modern for its time, and in its richness remains much so today. Recorded at the Chapel of Merton College, Oxford, 15 –17 November 2006. Producer: Jonathan Freeman-Attwood. Balance Engineer: Simon Fox-Gál . Editing: Sebastian Schubert & Simon Fox-Gál .

Choir of Christ Church Cathedral, Oxford - Howard Goodall's Choir Works & Choirs Perform
Howard Goodall's Choir Works & Choirs Perform (KULTUR VIDEO , DVD) February 2009
Featuring Choir of Christ Church Cathedral, Oxford
HOWARD GOODALL: CHOIR WORKS Driven by the infectious enthusiasm of zany writer and presenter Howard Goodall, we travel to locations around the world to focus on people, their lives, individual traditions, customs and histories. The four programs set out to show how singing in groups is fundamental to the way communities express themselves. From the joyous sounds of South Africa, thro Nashville, USA, and Bulgaria, to the traditional cathedral choirs of England, the series gives a refreshing overview of some of the vastly different choral traditions of the world today. CHOIRS PERFORM This performance special showcases seven of the world leading choirs and their contrasting choral traditions. The rich and haunting harmonies of South African Iscathimiya ?a call and response style ?are performed here by Ladysmith Black Mambazo. Christ Church Cathedral Choir in Oxford and Salisbury Cathedral Girls Choir, both stalwarts of English church music, perform works by Byrd, Stanford and Bruckner. The keening, yearning tone of Bulgaria throaty Cosmic Voices is contrasted with the joyous and heartfelt gospel of Just Us and The Temple Church Choirs in Nashville, and the clarity and purity of The Academic Female Choir of Tartu University nationalistic folk songs in Estonia. The variety in each choir repertory is complemented by their striking costumes.

Choir of Christ Church Cathedral, Oxford - Best Bits of Mr. Bean
Best Bits of Mr. Bean (Polygram , DVD) 1996
Featuring Choir of Christ Church Cathedral, Oxford   The Choir of Southwark Cathedral
Snippets from 11 episodes of the TV series. Theme music sung by the Southwark Cathedral Choir, no appearance. Later sung by the Christ Church Cathedral Choir, Oxford. The title music "Ecce homo" ("Behold the man"), like many TV themes by Howard Goodall, was originally written as a serious piece of church choral music. New lyrics (in Latin) were written for "Mr. Bean": "Ecce homo qui est faba. Vale homo qui est faba" ("Behold the man who is a bean. Farewell the man who is a bean").
